SUMMARY:Kick-off Meeting | CEN Workshop on “Guidelines for Disaster Risk Preparedness Solutions”
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to share some exciting news: a CEN Workshop on “Guidelines for Disaster Risk Preparedness Solutions” is being launched\, building directly on the innovative results of the PARATUS and SYNERGIES projects. \nThis cluster-led initiative tackles a common challenge: ensuring the long-term sustainability of EU-funded project results. Too often\, innovative tools and solutions risk becoming hard to access\, forgotten\, or duplicated once projects end. The CEN Workshop will address this by offering structured guidance on hosting\, governance\, and intellectual property arrangements\, helping to preserve and maximise impact over time. \n\nKick-off Meeting: 24 September 2025\, 10:00–12:30 CEST.\n\n Register here! \nWhat is a CWA?\nA CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) is a publicly available document developed through a collaborative process under the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN). Unlike formal standards\, it is: \n\nFaster to develop – ideal for emerging fields\,\nVoluntary – but widely respected across Europe\,\nFlexible – adaptable to real-world needs.\n\nIn essence\, a CWA transforms innovative project outcomes into structured\, reusable resources that support long-term impact and better coordination. \nWhat will this CWA deliver?\nThe new CWA\, initiated by SYNERGIES and PARATUS\, will provide good practice guidelines for documenting\, sharing\, and sustaining disaster preparedness solutions. Its goals include: \n\nSupporting sustainability: ensuring preparedness tools remain usable beyond project lifetimes.\nPromoting consistency: improving how tools are described and shared.\nStrengthening impact: making solutions easier to discover\, compare\, and integrate into practice.\nReducing duplication: building on what already exists and making better use of public funding.\n\nRather than developing new tools\, the CWA will ensure that what we already build has lasting impact. \nWhy now?\nAs the disaster risk management landscape grows more complex\, with new policies\, programmes\, and projects emerging across Europe\, there has never been a better time to connect\, align\, and share. Through this initiative\, projects gain a stronger collective voice and visibility\, ensuring their contributions are recognised and sustained. \nWhy get involved?\nBy participating\, you can: \n\nContribute your expertise and insights to shape the guidelines\,\nShowcase your project’s results and increase their visibility\,\nMake your tools easier to adopt and sustain\,\nAlign with European-level coordination efforts\,\nDemonstrate leadership in collaboration and sustainability.\n\nFor any questions\, please reach out to the CMINE team.

SUMMARY:EU-JAPAN Forum on Research and Innovation Communication in Support of Disaster Societal Resilience and Risk Governance
DESCRIPTION:On 3 and 4 March\, Funda Atun from the University of Twente will represent PARATUS at the EU-JAPAN Forum on Research and Innovation Communication in Support of Disaster Societal Resilience and Risk Governance in Kyoto\, Japan. \nABOUT THE EVENT \nSocietal resilience to disasters and risk governance are embedded in international policies such as the UN Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and\, in the European Union\, the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM)\, leading to recommendations that guide policy actions at national\, regional and local levels. While EU policies mix coordination mechanisms of voluntary character in the civil protection sector (e.g. UCPM) and of legislation of binding character in other sectors (e.g. the Flood Directive)\, awareness of citizens and local authorities seems often far away from the policy framework. When speaking about EU research and innovation related to Disaster Risk Management (DRM)\, the situation is even worse\, and there is a big valley between applied research results and their recognition at regional or local levels. Efforts to bring together key DRM actors\, including policy-makers\, scientists\, practitioners\, SME/industry and civil society representatives are on-going at international\, national and regional levels to exchange best practices that take into account different views from sectors\, disciplines\, cultures\, and exchanges among various research projects which have gradually improved the participation of societal actors and representatives of local authorities (including municipalities). In this respect\, a range of projects developed partnerships with Japanese organisations (mainly universities) with a focus on societal resilience and technologies for first responders. The workshop aims to gather representatives from international cooperation research consortia in the DRR area\, involving Japanese partners and exchanging about research outputs and the way they are communicated in respective countries. In particular\, discussions will focus on the way scientific findings are communicated and implemented (or not!) by local\, regional and national authorities in both the EU and Japan from both an academic as well as practitioners’ viewpoint. Discussions will include science to policy transfer at all levels\, with an accent on education\, awareness-raising and disaster preparedness in an “all-society approach”. The event is expected to provide insights on similarities and differences between Japan and EU countries\, and deliver recommendations regarding disaster risk governance as the countries move towards improved territorial resilience. \nDRAFT AGENDA OUTLINE \n\nCOMMUNICATION WITH THE PUBLIC: Role and actions of citizen and spontaneous volunteers\, national and international initiatives\nRETURN OF EXPERIENCES AND R&D FEEDBACK: Focus on disaster examples (flood\, earthquake\, major industrial accident) involving city representatives\, first responders\, scientists\nIMPROVED DISASTER RESILIENT SOCIETIES\, RISK MANAGEMENT AND GOVERNANCE: Challenges of disaster risks and disaster risk management for local / regional authorities\, systemic risk assessment\, mitigation / adaptation decision-making\, technology developments\nSUPPORT TO THE SENDAI DRR FRAMEWORK – NEEDS FOR NETWORK OF NETWORKS: Role of IDRIM\, current trends in networking with national networks and potentials for an international networking in support of Sendai FWA

SUMMARY:Security Research Event (SRE) 2023
DESCRIPTION:On 24-25 October 2023\, PARATUS will join the Security Research Event (SRE) 2023 in Brussels. The event\, organised by the European Commission\, is the annual meeting where policy-makers\, first responders\, researchers and industry come together to discuss the state of play and current challenges for civil security\, and ways in which research and innovation can contribute towards the policy goals. \nSocietal transformations\, climate change and digitalisation – a new paradigm of Security Research?\nClimate change and related extreme weather events will affect our ability to live as before. They will impact access to clean water\, food and affordable energy\, thereby creating scarcity and potentially triggering social unrest or displacement of population. At the same time\, the real and digital worlds are increasingly intertwined\, deeply impacting society at all levels\, with an increased penetration of social media and algorithmically amplified information\, and creating new opportunities for criminals. \nSecurity authorities are facing a changing world\, bringing both opportunities and challenges\, that requires rethinking the capabilities needed to perform their missions. While the demand for critical raw materials is projected to increase drastically\, geopolitical tensions and global competition generate risks for supply chains and may affect states` sovereignty\, prosperity\, safety\, and security. \nThis cascading impact of megatrends demands a renewed debate on the role to be played\, and contribution to be delivered\, by EU security research. \nThe Exhibition will concretely support the SRE 2023 main theme and will be open through the 2 days of the event. Moreover\, it will be enriched with small scale demos prepared by the selected projects. \nSRE ’23 will take place during the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU and is prepared and organised with the support of Sweden and Spain. \n
